Research Blog: Music Video Conventions

I will be producing a music video with the genre pop. The song I chose was originally made and used in an animated film. Therefore, it was difficult to research a specific type of music video to be able to relate back to, leaving a lot of room for interpretation. This was the most difficult part of the researching process, coming up with an idea that related to the song. I then decided to look directly at the lyrics and rhythm of the song and search for similar songs who do have music videos. I based my inspiration off the music videos of Home by Phillip Phillips, Home by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, and You're the Inspiration by Chicago. Together, the main theme of these videos were all about traveling, curiosity or escaping with little to few main actors, creating a comfortable atmosphere. All of the actors in the music videos showed great emotion, whether it was sadness, happiness, or anger. Both men and women were found in the all of the music videos, leaving my actor choices open. The main type of emotion was happiness overcoming the sadness with little to no talking occurring, leaving the actor to express their emotions in their face, body language, or actions. The people and setting in these videos were casual and normal, no extravagant clothing items or places, keeping the videos relatable, yet still interesting. I found this to be the most obvious connection between all the music videos, its relatability to the average human. The music videos also took place inside and outside, depending on the situation, time, era, or mental state. Some were in grassy fields giving off a sunny and angelic aura or at night with a single light giving off a soothing and energetic feeling. Moving to the production part of the music video, there was not a lot of variety in the camera angles or shots, keeping the video simple and calm. However, there were some tilted angles to keep the audience engaged along with fluctuation in lighting. There were also no logos or names of the band or singer found in the video at all. Also, there will most likely be no more than 2 people in this video because it needs to feel very tightknit and cozy rather than extreme and uncomfortable. Some of the videos I encountered were focused around one main problem or issue, like domestic abuse or just escaping reality. Also, since majority of the videos and lyrics are about traveling or journeys, the packing of a backpack or some sort of luggage was a crucial prop and action. This will thoroughly show to the audience what is about to happen or is already happening. I plan to include every convention mentioned in my upcoming music video.
