Genre Research: Us


For our research, we decided to watch the movie Us. Released in 2019, Us is a horror/thriller film directed by Jordan Peele. While watching the film, there were multiple elements that stood out to us. We enjoyed the variety of sounds and music that played throughout the film at any given scene. The soundtrack of the movie was unique and featured many eerie background music that could send shivers down the spine. Sometimes, there was even upbeat Beach Boys music playing while the characters were being murdered. It created an uncanny and ironic contrast between the events happening. It made the audiences think, "what...is going on?"  In our opening sequence, we hope to use eerie background music as well. Additionally, the characters and dialogue were realistic. Of course, there were a few fantasy elements surrounding the murders, but, to provide an example, the family that was on a vacation interacted with each other in a realistic and relatable way. Thus, when they were randomly murdered, it brought more of a surprise to the audience. It made the audience frightened thinking that that could be them at any time. We plan to have realistic dialogue as well in our opening. There were some elements that my group and I were not as fond of. Specifically, the gore and violence. The movie contained multiple scenes of people being stabbed with scissors, some of them even children. This could make some people uncomfortable, and definitely was something that I did not like. This movie helped give us an idea of what we wanted to incorporate into our opening. Overall, the relatable characters and frightening music is what we would want to try and incorporate into our project.

Filming Blog: Bubbling Sounds and White Lighting

Sunday, November 1st, is the day I started and finished the filming part of my commercial. Since the sun was not entirely out, myself and my sister filmed that shots that did not need the bright lighting first. I had to adjust the time between takes to wait for when the sun was at its brightest. First, I had to move my desk in front of a plan wall in my house. We did use white lightbulbs in lamps to achieve a clear, crispy shot and lighting that could bounce off the plain wall. Although, we did have trouble shooting with the shadows behind me. My first shot was a picture of the beginning card before the commercial began. I positioned the lighting to where I needed it, in front of the camera and me. While I was taking this picture, water was boiling on the stove to produce the bubbling sound. Although, while I was listening to the recording of the boiling water, it sounded similar to rain and not that of bubbling. Critical Reflection Questions

 1. How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?     Throughout the commercial, consistency was a major part. There was only one character or actor in the commercial which was the advertiser and salesperson. The actor's wardrobe was casual, yet business like. This would allow the audience to connect with the actor creating a trusting bond making the watcher buy the product. The specific setting of a white background and white lighting was also needed in order for the product to pop. This allows the audience to clearly see the product and make them focus on what the creator wants them to. Also, the way the actor speaks with their high energy diction, makes this commercial target everyone of every class level.  2. Editing Blog: Testing Filters and Adjusters

   As I finished filming, I began editing and piecing my videos, clips, and audios together. After airdropping the video clips from my phone to the laptop, I began importing the first half of the music video into iMovie. This took a little bit of time considering how long each file was. Some of my clips were a little longer than what I anticipated when shooting. I needed to trim them down to 5 seconds or less in order for the clips to fit the time frame. Some scenes were extremely longer meaning that I needed to trash them all together and film another day. I attempted to either slow down or speed up clips so that they could fit in, but they looked too awkward and out of place. I then added the 1 minute audio of the song I chose and placed it over the clips. I made sure to silent and mute every clip I had so that the music could be clearly heard and not covered by any noises in the videos.
