Filming Blog: Lighting in Darkness

Image
Saturday, November 28th, is the day I started the filming part of my music video. I spent the day preparing for the location and set for filming the second part of my music video. I started with the second half rather than the first because the sun went down early. This meant that there was more time for darkness and nighttime which was crucial for the second half on my music video. I first began to pick out the proper outfit and props that I needed for the scenes, making sure that everything was planned out. The first two scenes went accordingly, however I did find trouble when shooting outside during the night. When shooting the shot of the girl walking outside the main door, the lighting was not in my favor. The lighting from inside the house mixed with the natural light form outside did not mix well. I had to play around with different lights that were on and off, inside and outside the house. The lighting was difficult to work with because I did not want the lighting...

Planning Storyboard for My Music Video

Image
The First Scene: The opening scene will be in a bedroom of a girl sleeping in a perfectly made bed as she sleeps very still and perfect. In the same shot, it will pan to the girl's head become an overhead view of the girl opening her eyes. The Second Scene: Girl wakes up and fixes her bed into a perfect, military style fold. She will have a straight, not happy emotion on her face.  The Third Scene: Cut to girl in bathroom looking at herself in the mirror with the same straight face. She is getting ready for the day by brushing her teeth and washing her face. The Fourth Scene: She changes into a different outfit from her original pajamas, a more strict, clean cut look. She will be looking in the mirror with the same straight, unhappy face. The Fifth Scene: Cut to the girl sitting at a desk with piles of books and notebooks for school. Her teacher will come around to her desk and see that she is not focusing on her studies, but rather looking at a map of around h...

Planning for My Music Video

Song Title:  The song I will be doing is Wonderful Life by Zendaya from the movie Smallfoot. The character singing the song is a yeti who is on top of a mountain curious about the humans beneath it on the ground. The main message of the song is that asking questions and being curious about the world around you is what makes a wonderful life. Props:  There will be multiple props in my music video because there will be multiple locations. Such as a duffle bag, a cereal bowl, a bike and many more. Costumes:  There will either be two or three outfit changes in the video depending on where the actor will be going. At first the character will be wearing a strict, business type attire. They will then switch into an all black outfit with a black beanie and duffle bag or a flowy dress that shows expression. Schedule:  11/17/2020: I will I will research the conventions found in the genre of my music video.  11/17/2020: I will produce the planning for the music video such ...

Research Blog: Music Video Conventions

Image
I will be producing a music video with the genre pop. The song I chose was originally made and used in an animated film. Therefore, it was difficult to research a specific type of music video to be able to relate back to, leaving a lot of room for interpretation. This was the most difficult part of the researching process, coming up with an idea that related to the song. I then decided to look directly at the lyrics and rhythm of the song and search for similar songs who do have music videos. I based my inspiration off the music videos of Home by Phillip Phillips, Home by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, and You're the Inspiration by Chicago. Together, the main theme of these videos were all about traveling, curiosity or escaping with little to few main actors, creating a comfortable atmosphere. All of the actors in the music videos showed great emotion, whether it was sadness, happiness, or anger. Both men and women were found in the all of the music videos...

Introduction to the Music Video Project

Image
For this music video project, I have decided to work by myself and not with multiple people. I do believe that I will excel in this way by not having anything holding me back as I have learned with previous assignments. Being in a pandemic, for my safety and others, it is important to keep up the social distancing and have no large gatherings. Although, I will have additional help for my film through close family. I believe that I will get this project done efficiently if I only rely on myself and my production skills. This way I am able to hold myself accountable for anything that might occur, in my favor or not. I will also be able to be more creative in my work which would be very difficult in a group of conflicting ideas. I also hope to further my production skills and become more familiar with the filming industry by doing this project. My time management skills will also improve from my last project where I was slightly unfamiliar with how fast paced and q...

Critical Reflection Questions

Image
 1. How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?     Throughout the commercial, consistency was a major part. There was only one character or actor in the commercial which was the advertiser and salesperson. The actor's wardrobe was casual, yet business like. This would allow the audience to connect with the actor creating a trusting bond making the watcher buy the product. The specific setting of a white background and white lighting was also needed in order for the product to pop. This allows the audience to clearly see the product and make them focus on what the creator wants them to. Also, the way the actor speaks with their high energy diction, makes this commercial target everyone of every class level.  2. How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text?     This commercial would be distributed on television, making it accessible to everyone. It w...

OxiClean Commercial

With this being my second editing project this year, I found it to be easy yet challenging. Looking at my progress, I could see some things could have changed. Majority of my difficulties came from the editing portion of this project. My number one challenge was the internet and uploading difficulty. However, through persistence, my project was uploaded. Moving forward, when looking at the film's rubric, I noticed a few crucial requirements I had forgotten. I then went back to shooting and reshot the scenes I had missed. My attention for details and requirements are much greater than before. My production skills as a director and editor have also greatly improved, seeing that this was my first live action film with multiple shots. Previous films were quick and easy with lack of skills. Furthermore, I have learned that lighting is a key detail to pay attention to. Since my commercial was filmed inside with multiple windows showing many different shadows at d...

Editing Blog: Checking for Choppiness

Image
As I finished filming, I began editing and piecing my videos, clips, and audios together. After airdropping the video clips from my phone to the laptop, I began importing all the clips into iMovie. I then cut each clip to the duration I needed for each scene. The commercial was well over the 30-31 second time frame which meant that I needed to further trim and cut the clips. Some scenes needed to be sped up in order to fulfill the time sequence. After I adjusted each clip, I began to detach the audio from recordings to place over action scenes in my commercial. This will allow a voiceover effect to the commercial. I also did this technique with the bubbling sound effect in the first, beginning scene of the commercial. Next, I imported music and placed it over the entire commercial. I made sure to check and adjust the levels of the sounds between the music and my voice so they would not clash with each other. I also did this to make sure neither would overpower the ot...

Filming Blog: Bubbling Sounds and White Lighting

Image
Sunday, November 1st, is the day I started and finished the filming part of my commercial. Since the sun was not entirely out, myself and my sister filmed that shots that did not need the bright lighting first. I had to adjust the time between takes to wait for when the sun was at its brightest. First, I had to move my desk in front of a plan wall in my house. We did use white lightbulbs in lamps to achieve a clear, crispy shot and lighting that could bounce off the plain wall. Although, we did have trouble shooting with the shadows behind me. My first shot was a picture of the beginning card before the commercial began. I positioned the lighting to where I needed it, in front of the camera and me. While I was taking this picture, water was boiling on the stove to produce the bubbling sound. Although, while I was listening to the recording of the boiling water, it sounded similar to rain and not that of bubbling. I then took a straw in a glass of water and pushed air to produce bubbles...
